TAMPA, FL - Seacoast United captured two National Championships this afternoon at the Super Y North American Finals in Tampa, Florida.
The U16 girls defeated the Long Island Rough Riders by a score of 2-1, while the U15 girls won 4-3 over TSF Academy (NJ) in a thrilling overtime match.
In the U16 Final, Seacoast’s first half goal was scored by Lydia Simmons as the score was even 1-1 at halftime. Abby Smith’s 2nd half tally was the eventual game-winner. The team went 5-0 for the tournament through preliminary bracket play and playoff rounds.
In the U15 Final, Seacoast United took a 3-1 lead in the 2nd half before TSF Academy rallied back to even the score and force the game to overtime. Seacoast took the 4-3 lead with 8 minutes remaining and held on for the title.
"I am extremely proud of the dedication and application they have showed all year and this is just rewards for their efforts. Our girls program is going from strength to strength and will continue to thrive with the extra demands we place on our girls. I would like to congratulate both Ian Burgess and David Burgess who have worked tirelessly over the past year preparing the girls to give them every success on and off the field," said Director of Coaching Iain Scott.
"I’m delighted both of the teams have played really well on their way to the National Championships. Its a marvelous accomplishment for the girls and the Seacoast United organization. I’m also thrilled that the U14 girls had a very strong showing, winning two and drawing two, and were a little unlucky not to advance to the semi-finals themselves," said Club President Paul Willis.
The championships are the third and fourth overall for Seacoast United, with prior championships in 2009 (U14 Girls) and 2004 (U15 Girls). More information can be found on USL’s website here.
